The Rising Wave of Anxiety and Stress
Anxiety and stress have become increasingly prevalent, particularly among younger generations. With the relentless pressures of work, personal life, and the omnipresent influence of social media, more people are feeling overwhelmed than ever before. On top of this, the constant influx of alarming news—from the devastating effects of global warming, toxic political leadership and wars to economic instability—only exacerbates these feelings.
Recent studies reveal that anxiety-related disorders are now the most common mental health issue globally, impacting millions. The World Health Organization reports a 25% increase in anxiety since the pandemic, underscoring the growing scale of this challenge. In addition to the personal pressures many of us face, political shifts toward right-wing populism in numerous EU countries and the US, alongside increasing geopolitical tensions, further heighten the sense of uncertainty and fear for the future.
I know this all too well. As someone who has battled anxiety for much of my life, I’ve spent countless hours researching, visiting retreats, consulting health professionals, and exploring various tools and mental strategies to cope. The good news is that stress and anxiety can be managed and reduced to very low levels. The tools and practices I’ve used are working, and in recent years, my bouts of anxiety became fewer and fewer. When I do feel it, it’s more of a light sensation rather than the overwhelming wave that once tumbled me over. I can now address it with some breathing or meditation, or by checking in with myself to see what has caused it.
As a result, I’ve made this one of the key focuses of my work, helping many of my clients manage their anxiety. I also incorporate some very calming and effective science-based tools like Breathwork into my practice.
While social media often promotes quick-fix solutions—those enticing 3-to-5-step methods that supposedly “cure” anxiety once and for all—those who suffer from chronic anxiety know the reality is far more complex. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Finding what works for you requires trial and error, and even then, solutions may change over time. I learned how to manage and live with this condition. Coaching and counselling helped me explore the root of the anxiety. Holistic practices like yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi proven to be effective, as are meditation and Breathwork, both Game Changers for me.
I’ve personally used a combination of the methods above: On some days, I easily relax into meditation. On other days, I notice that sitting in stillness only heightens my anxiety, so I switch to Breathwork.
The silver lining? We’re becoming more aware of the critical importance of mental health, and there is a growing focus on finding holistic ways to manage stress and anxiety. The journey toward better mental well-being is ongoing, but as our awareness increases, so too does the opportunity for positive change.
